Top Bar Links / GameDev.tv Link Not Working

Just as a heads up - the new links look good, nice to see their return, but I think it has broken the GameDev.tv link - it now only goes to # and no longer returns you to the main home page - this was the problem we were experiencing just before all of the read messages issue occurred (havenā€™t tested that yet)

Holding down the g key and pressing the h key will return you to the forumā€™s main home page as an interim solution.

The desktop version appears to be working again now, with regards to being able to click on, initially, the title of the topic in the green bar, followed by the GameDev.tv image - it now returns you to the main set of categories. Mobile functionality still not working as per the other topic.

On my mobile the GameDev.tv logo no longer does anything. Equally, the burger icon on the green bar no longer does anything when pressed either.

Just a heads upā€¦

Mobile usage seems a tag broken tooā€¦ the modal for typing posts in is behaving oddly, its very small and its quite difficult to edit/update post content. Some strange scrolling effects too.

Thanks Rob, I, getting this on the iPad too. @sampattuzzi will take a look next weekā€¦

Cool. The header bar seems quite sensitive to changes. :disappointed_relieved:

Just spotted this on the Wiki history modalā€¦

Hope this is of use.

Thanks Rob, @sampattuzzi will sort it Iā€™m sure

This appears to be fixed, thanks @sampattuzzi.

Not working on my Samsung S6.

GameDev.tv Logo

* The GameDev.tv logo simply flashes white briefly and doesnā€™t do anything. working as of 22/12/2016

Green Bar - Burger Icon

  • Launch the drop down menu but you still have to click on it again to get rid of it, rather than anywhere on the screen, which doesnā€™t feel intuitive
  • If I select Voting, the Voting site launches, but the Burger icon on the green bar there doesnā€™t do anything
  • The Blog option works as described on the first bullet point

Re-opened and un-solved as per the conventions.

Further informationā€¦

I have realised that the top green bar is behaving differently depending on whether the page is opened from within Chrome (on my Samsung S6) or, if it is from the icon saved to the home screen for the website. It appears to be a subtle difference but one that does cause this problem.

Within the Chrome app

_Launched from the saved icon on the home screen

@sampattuzzi please take a look

Okay. The issue on the voting site has been fixed. As for the not closing when clicking elsewhere, I have decided to leave that one as itā€™s too hard to implement here on discourse.

What about the differnent behaviours depending on whether the forum is from with a browse or from a homescreen icon @sampattuzzi, are we leaving that one too?

Well, using knowledge from the coursesā€¦it looks like (maybe Jeff Atwood has to do this) some kind of ā€œunit testā€ has to be added to the forum to check, for example, that the Top Bar Link works, since that seems to break and get fixed at random times. The maintenance principle of, when thereā€™s a bug, not only fix it but add a test to check that it stays fixed.

I think Jeff may disagree on this slightly @Todd_Vance, their out of the box product probably does go through those kinds of tests, but my understanding is that there are various customisations that users (owners / admins etc) of the specific forum instance can make, both in terms of functionality and css.

I guess what Iā€™m saying is that if we make changes, and it changes the behaviour of the forum, we canā€™t really expect Jeff to fix/run tests for that - each case would be different obviously, but as an example, if we added some code for a plugin, and our code was wrong, itā€™s not really over to Jeff to solve, as it would be our changes that broke it.

I would agree with what you are saying from the perspective of when we make changes, but I think perhaps one of the things that makes it a bit harder when making the customisations to the forum is that there isnā€™t a test platform, at least as far as I know, you make your changes, they are live.

I could be wrong, but Ben / Sam have never mentioned that there is a test platform to apply changes to first before making them live, so I have to assume there is just the one instance of the hosted solution that we get to play with :slight_smile:

I suppose of the forum was core business you could argue that having a second instance of it, for testing changes / customisations, would be a worthy investment of time / money, but really itā€™s a nice to have item isnā€™t it - the GameDev.tv team could have just left us with the Q&A on Udemy (*shudder*)ā€¦ :slight_smile:

I suspect the majority of forum issues would disappear if I stopped looking :wink:

We are leaving the home screen issue then Ben?

Iā€™m not sure what the homescreen issue is. Could you clarify? Is it the lack of URL bar?

Hi @sampattuzzi, sure, itā€™s the same issue.

If I do this;

The behaviour is as expected, e.g. the main categories page loads

If however I do this;

  • Open Chrome
  • Change the URL to https://community.gamedev.tv
  • Tap on the ellipses icon
  • Tap on Add to Home Screen
  • Close Chrome
  • Tap the icon to launch the forum from the Home screen
  • Tap on a topic
  • Tap on the GameDev logo

It simply flashes white and doesnā€™t return the user to the categories page.

The Add to Home Screen functionality is beneficial as it provides a one tap point of access to the forum.
