Top Bar Links / Profile Links - Suggestion

Yes, I know, I can hear you all sighing from here in Bristol… however, bear with me…

So, I was looking at the Community / Voting / Udemy / Blog (CVUB) links today and I noticed that the moment you scroll down - which I’m guessing most users will either do manually, or, if they are looking at a comment to a post the software will automatically scroll them down to the earliest post they’d not read - people aren’t going to be seeing these links very much.

Example;

The main page loads:

I scroll down just a little bit;

Also, oddly, the search and my profile links have jumped up to the green bar, where they weren’t at the start?

I checked the Discourse site to just see whether this was standard behaviour or something different, on their site the search and profile links always remain in what would be our green bar.

Example;

The main page loads:

I scroll down just a little bit;

The search functionality and my profile links remain easy to find and use.

I believe the CVUB links are of benefit to the community, although I’m not sure about the clarity of the Voting wording personally, if they can see them, and equally so is the search functionality and the profile link. I was wondering whether it would be possible to achieve something more like this;

Obviously a little bit more nicely than my thrown together screenshots (wording vertically align in the middle of the bar etc). I thought this would achieve the best of both worlds, prominent links to the other areas of GameDev.tv, and use of the existing site functionality.

I wondered whether, as and when this gets looked at to solve the hyperlink issues this could also be considered at the same time?

The problem is this wouldn’t be consistent across all our sites and that’s what we were trying to creating with this header bar.

Hey Sam,

Could it float on the other sites too? e.g the user scrolls down, the bar stay across the top of the screen enabling the use of all of the options without needing to scroll back up?

…with the exception of the Udemy site obviously!

The problem being that those buttons only relate to the community site.

Fair enough. Just seems that with everyone scrolling down on the forums to view posts, they’ll not be actually on the screen anyway - consistency is then gone etc…

Not to worry, was only a thought…
