Baking normal map on Orc Horn turning out yellow

image
The orc body map turned out ok looking, but when I bake the horn following the process grant goes over, but it is turning yellow. I’ve tried adjusting the max ray distance, I’ve tried making a cage model (not sure if that matters for normal maps). Any ideas would be appreciated!

Search the ask section here for baking problems they may well help.

First impression is the areas are very specific but no idea where they are on the orc. It may imply a more pronounced low poly difference to the high poly in that area.

The yellow spot is my concern, which is the left horn which is a separate mesh than my orc body. Are you saying because the horn is lower poly, it could be yellow and ok? Or is yellow in a normal map something that is rendering incorrectly?

Check your normals on both Orcs.

No, I was speculating that there was a bigger difference between the high and low poly shape.

I’ve been searching the ask section, haven’t found any solutions there yet. I’m not sure what you mean about it being a bigger difference between the high poly and low poly?

To exaggerate to explain, I mean is the LP a square around a HP Sphere. Poor fit.

The main reason I am considering that is the rest of the bake is pretty reasonable. This suggests not a process problem, but some specific geometry related issue.
As FedPete mentioned check all Normals direction is correct too.

Check smoothing too.

That was it! I’m not sure how my horns normals got reversed. However, I checked normal position and it was completely red, so I went into edit mode, hit shift+n to recalculate normals, and now it looks glorious. Thank you!

I’m glad you’ve solved it!
This part frustrates many students. But also many things can go wrong.
For us it’s too much work sometimes.
So we’ve made a wiki with a lot of problem solutions.

Have fun, check your models regularly. Small mishaps leads to big dissasters. Have fun!
