2024 Collab: Week 41 “Cell shaded” - VOTE CLOSED

This is the Blender Collaboration 2024, week 41 challenge. Don’t be afraid to join, a lot of us are beginners. This is all to practice, have fun, learn, and get together.

This week’s subject is “Cell shaded”.

  • Cell shaded - Cell shading or toon shading is a type of non-photorealistic rendering designed to make 3D computer graphics appear to be flat by using less shading color instead of a shade gradient or tints and shades. A cel shader is often used to mimic the style of a comic book or cartoon and/or give the render a characteristic paper-like texture.
  • Subject selected by the previous Week 39, 2024 “Parade floats" winner xealstrag

The rules are simple. 1 subject, 1 entry, 1 week.
You create whatever object or scene or whatever you can think of that has something to do with the subject. It can be as simple or complicated as you want, all entries are welcome!
Post your picture here in this thread. At the end of the week, we start to vote. And if you are the winner, you may choose the next subject and win a unique badge.

Deadline: 2024-10-12T21:55:00Z

I understand this as some sort of posterization. Is that right? Or should I aim to use a deliberately-limited color palette or something else?

Here, I can show an example. I’m using this shader setup for what I have in mind. I have one light in the scene, and this is rendered in eevee. You can simply apply this to your model and change the rgb color node and adjust the color ramp.

This version has a glossy shader mixed in on top to give your object a reflection.

Thank you! I had a similar notion in mind, though still had not tried it

Is it ok to submit a piece I never finished from a previous Blender Collab (I didn’t submit it but did show the in progress)? If so, I may have some time to polish that entry and create some cell shaders for it. I unfortunately don’t have time to model something from scratch this week.

Yes, it’s okay.
The Collab isn’t a contest, you can reuse, retry project assets.

Not convinced by the original results but I’m happy with the changes

If every participation ribbon was one of these instead, people would be a lot more active! :+1:

Work in progress, trying to figure out how to paint it :

This is the one:

Very creative! This reminds me a lot of those drawing exercises where you just draw random parts all over the page and form a giant nonsense machine (though yours is much cleaner than what that exercise would produce of course).

I suggest adding a line art modifier to that beautifull mech

We @BlenderCollab have a few days to vote. You can vote fast but also think slowly about design, colors, technique, difficulty, subject, realism, etc. Choose consciously and not on your entry.
The new subject week 42 “Candy house” has already started. The winner of this week’s “Cell shaded” challenge may select a subject for next week 43 and win a badge.

I had never tried that modifier. I just tried it, and it looks exactly how I had imagined it, thank you, @Joey_Cuevas !

If it wasn’t for @FedPete’s entry I would have voted for @NP5, that’s the most original take on “cells shaded” I’ve ever seen in my entire life.
