I went to school for software but ended up leaving and working in the family business. I have done well but i’m almost 40 and want to find out if I can make the shift back into coding and start pursing my passion. I will persevere with the support of my family and the help of people I meet online in forums like this. Looking forward to working with everyone!
I initially purchased this course in December of 2015 with the intention of furthering my Unreal Engine skills by developing a working knowledge of Unreal Engine with C++. I went through the first few sections of the course slowly over the course of the next couple of years due to some health issues, and came back and restarted a couple of times as a few things had changed, and I wanted to get the benefit of the new content. In 2018 I finally re-committed myself to getting through it, and after a few months of going at it again, I realized I was struggling as I had a lot of brain-fog due to a health condition, and I just couldn’t wrap my mind around some of the topics. Not one to give up, I decided that I would benefit by learning a bit more of C++ syntax first, so I took the time to go through some basic courses at CodeCanyon and SoloLearn and moved onto doing coding challenges at Codingame, Codecombat, Codewars and the like, while simultaneously working on improving my health and removing the brain-fog through fasting, tDCS, a better diet, exercise and meditation.
Long story short (well, kind of long actually lol), it worked! I got through the brain fog and learned a good deal of C++ along the way, so now I am back for a final go (I plan on finishing this time) at the course, so I can finally work to live my dream and make the game I have always wanted to make!
Happily for me, just as I returned I see the course has been updated yet again and I have the good-fortune of being able to do it all in a fresh new way.
Thanks Ben!
As another fellow in the ‘almost 40’ crowd, I have the utmost respect and understanding for your desire. Keep up the good work!
I’m an artist major in character animation, but with my career proceed.
I become the integration guy for the art stuffs in the game engine.
Many of my work rely on other programmers, and then I discovered Unreal and the blueprint.
I started to make some simple gimmicks, but due to lack of knowledge for coding. Most of my gimmicks are buggy and unnecessarily heavy performance-wise. I felt very sorry to my fellow developers, but can not help to make something interesting.
In my work place. Artists are much replaceable and prone to be assigned to some trivializing tasks (nothing to do with art), and earned much less at the same time.
As a result, I become more eager to learn coding. I wish to slowly leaning myself to the programmer team. Become a dual-welding kind of developer.
I’ve always wanted to learn to code and make games. I have done a little in the past but have not touched it in a long time. I am currently stuck in a career that I do not care for and wish to make a transition. Hopefully this helps in achieving that!
Hi all,
As a high school senior about to graduate and go to university, I bought this course with the intent to gain some more academic preparation for my programming career plans, which, hopefully, will land me in my dream job of being a software engineer/programmer for AAA games. With decent exposure in Unity and C# and writing some Java code, I like to compliment my programming abilities with a firm ground on another game engine and industry-standard programming language: Unreal and C++. I would persevere through this course for this main reason, as well as because I want to experience going from one who has little experience in a subject to one who has a firm grasp of it. I hope to employ the knowledge and experience from this course to future programming projects in college and in internships, co-ops, and full-time jobs. I will take it one step at a time, but with consistency, to get through tough times.
I play a lot of different kinds of video games, and I have always wanted to make my own. Recently I dabbled a bit into learning some basic coding and seen that it does interest me after all, thought I would look into doing an actual introductory but basic course into coding with the aim of game design, and this seems to be a good one. Hopefully I will be making my first small game in no time! Relatively speaking anyway
I want to learn a bit of everything before I study at a school, so I can go in feeling comfortable that I can just go along with the flow without the stress I not understanding something with a time limit.
Aliens made me do it
Ultimately, I’m hoping to learn something new. I love videogames and I think it would be a fun hobby to create something that I would enjoy playing (and hopefully something others would enjoy also). If I really like working with C++, then perhaps I’ll see if I can use it to change my career path.
I am going to stick to a routine so that I can get through those tough times. Hopefully by that point, I’ll also have the resources and community around me to help me sort out the problems that will inevitably come up.
Just trying to learn something new.
Hope it’s fun.
I will persevere in this course because there comes a moment in your life when you realize that you should do what you love to do for a career versus just working to pay the bills. And programming is that passion that I am going to pursue.
I hope to create a portfolio to be able to showcase my work to future employers.
I have also worked out a strategy to not let my own inner saboteur get in the way of my success by utilizing the tools provided by the instructor Ben through the Discord channel and this community forum. Plus, Google and Youtube will a very important asset to me as well.
I have taken up this course to develop the skills necessary for success in the Game Design and Development industries. I am currently enrolled in the bachelors degree online program at Full Sail University and have been heavily focused on Unity and C#, which on their own are a great Engine and Language, but as they are typically not the industry standard I have taking it upon myself to get as much experience as possible so I feel equipped to tackle any issue I may face while starting out my Game Design career.
My dream is to make games that inspire people to think of their place in the world, and what they can do as individuals to help make the world a better place.
I have been using Unity Engine since 2014 and now I get a paid project from Unreal cause of that I have to learn how to make games through Unreal Engine.
I enrolled in this course to expand on my skillset of hobby programming towards a platform I find engaging. Learning programming is difficult and constantly comes with challenges and I find that almost as much of a game as games themselves. I look forward to pushing myself.
I enrolled to test my commitment of one day becoming a game designer and owning my own company. What I hope to take away from this course is learning, knowing, and understanding the fundamental of coding and unreal engine. I understand that coding isn’t easy, which is a good thing, because it will help me appreciate my skills and talents and the goals that i want to achieve in my near future.
I want to make a living with the thing that i love as a child, videogames.
And my advise to keep persevering would be to try to have fun doing it, bugs and errors can be fun too, some of the best bugs and unwanted results in the industry made a debut latter on as a feature. You never know what could be usefull ^^.
My professional experience so far has been as a front end web developer, so I see this course as a good opportunity to build out a different skill set.
I initially bought this course in October 2017 and got through a few modules before life got in the way (e.g. I lost my job and had to find a new one ASAP). Now that things have settled down a bit, I’m ready to dive back in; it’s great to see that the course is being revamped too.
I’ve always been an avid learner, and my thirst for knowledge and building new skill sets will motivate me to press on in this endeavor
Such a flurry of new faces, and great sources of motivation. I hope that you continue to support each other this well.
My goal for this course is to understand the fundamentals of C++ coding in Unreal in order to develop the skills necessary to enter the gaming industry. I’m currently a student in game design, and I think external resources like this will prove invaluable in helping me stand out in the job market. I hope to create a variety of games which - hopefully - people enjoy, and are impressive on a technical level. My goal of becoming a renowned developer will keep me going through difficult times… And probably coffee too.
