AMAZING engagement on this topic guys, keep it up and support each other.
Dude right on. When my son turned 17 we enrolled into this course together and I was actually really surprised how well it went. Before we worked together on this I don’t think he had any concept about what people do in their adult lives for work. We talked about the different sides of programming and I was surprised to see that something really lit up inside of him. He figured out he’d have to start doing better in school to get in the college to get a good job and he totally cleaned up his act. I’m really proud of him now. He was totally going down the wrong path previously, even wearing emo clothes and smoking mad vape, all that new age kid hippie stuff.
Hey. I just want to build my knowledge on a wide variety of languages, and be capable of doing multiple things, whether it is unreal, unity, web development, etc. I’m extremely excited about learning some form of game development, as I haven’t done any work on it yet, so let’s go!
I want to use the resources given to me by learning this course to create games and tell wonderful stories. Some time ago, when this course was first starting in its initial iteration, I was very excited to start learning C++ and make games at the same time. However, my approach to learning and utilizing the course was immature and inefficient. At first, I expected the original coursework to be a lot more focused on Blueprints, and I had been disappointed that we were just doing straight code for several hours of video. I came to terms with that quickly though, because I do enjoy coding, however, I still didn’t come at the learning with the right mindset. I never did the challenges. “I just did this while following along with the video, why should I have to do it again? I’ve already memorized how to do it.” I thought. This was foolish and arrogant. Practice makes perfect no matter what, and I clearly hadn’t memorized it because I don’t remember how to do any of it today. I made the Bull Cow game when the course first came out, but if you told me to write it again I wouldn’t even know where to start. Even worse, though, I think, was that I never got into the community. At the end of every video, when Ben would say I should go show off my work and present the results of challenges to the forum, I thought it was completely unnecessary. I just wanted to keep learning. I wanted to get past these sections so I could start learning Blueprints. I ingested too much too quickly, never talked with anyone about it, and just blew on to the next video. It quickly became clear that I couldn’t make the cut doing it that way. Around 3/4ths of the way through the Bull Cow game I was completely lost. I grew frustrated because I stopped retaining enough information to even be able to do the challenges. I got most quiz questions wrong. I thought I could do everything, but I wasn’t dedicated in the way that I should have been. I let the frustration get to me and I stopped doing the course, promising myself I would eventually start over again later and do a better job of listening and being in the community. I never did. Ben choosing to revise the coursework has revitalized that plan for me.
I will do better this time. I’ll do the challenges, I’ll be involved with the community. I won’t do three hours of videos a day and simply follow along without actually learning and practicing. I want to do this right. I want to be able to make games on my own without always having to reference a youtube video. I’m going to work hard. I’m going to do the entire new coursework and learn C++, because the foundation and understanding the code is important, and then I am going to buy the secondary course that they’re working on for Blueprints and learn that too.
Thanks for having me, everyone. And thanks for the second chance, Ben.
im hoping to make a fun bot team deathmatch game for my friends so we can hop on and mess around, and possibly expand outwards as ive always felt warhammer 40k games were lacking and would love to try my hand at adding to the universe, given permission of course.
I want to make something of myself in this world. Humans are creative. I want to create and push beyond my outer boundaries. I know there is a vast wealth of energy and imagination to explore. I want to make real what I can imagine with the technical skills learned from this course. I have 0 knowledge about all of it! I don’t usually click youtube ads but here I am. Good luck everyone.
Hello world. I’d like to try making a small game myself, telling a story in a way only a video game can. Then I’d like to learn if switching careers to software and/or game development is something I’d really like to do!
Hello everyone, My name is David and I am new to the programming community.
I joined this course to learn something new. I love playing videogames however I have become disillusioned with the triple A games and have been disappointed in the products on the market. Due to this I have an idea for a game and want to see if I can bring it to life. I tried learning on my own however, I ran into some obstacles I am struggling to overcome due to lack of knowledge or core programming skills. I am hoping to gain insight into programming language and coding and how to implement these in the unreal engine 4. I have tried to code before and struggled in understanding it. I am hoping that I will be able to overcome this coming from a new mind set from when I originally tried to learn programming.
I’m here because I want to learn C++, but the thought of doing it with my dusty 2009 C++ text book or with a bunch of dry online tutorials explaining each little bit of syntax doesn’t exactly motivate me to spend what little free time I have to work on code (which I also do for my work!) . Making games is how I got interested in programming, and making things that sing and dance with code really helps me hold my interest and makes it more rewarding.
I imagine walking between the alleyways of a designed universe.
Hello Everyone! I’m taking this course so that I can leave my depressing, dead end office job and do something that I actually enjoy. Best of luck to everyone!
Hi, taking this course to find best game engine and programming language that will suite me.
Already in the middle of Unity course and C#. Did some Game Maker and GML, but drooped cause i didn’t like some approach to this engine. Currently i really love Unity, but i would like to grasp feeling of Unreal and then decide:).
I restarted the course to get this fresh in my head. I want to take this course so I can expand my skills in programming. I want to be able to base my portfolio on C++ and Unreal. I know C# so I want to learn this so I can market myself to possibly receive a job in Game Development.
I already have a background in programming, but different language, different class of problems and different skills. I want to challenge myself and learn something new, something that I find interesting rather than one I merely need for work, as well as gain better understanding of a topic I’m quite passionate about.
And I can create something with the skills I will learn, even better.
I’m Casey. I bought this course because, as a lifetime gamer, I finally wanted to see how the sausage is made - and to give a go at making my own. As a “creative type” I’m always curious about new methods of storytelling and expression and the world of gaming, while massive and successful, is still frontier territory in storytelling compared to longer-established media. It’s exciting and I want to see where I fit in the landscape.
I honestly don’t know what I’ll create - I’m a complete newbie to the game dev world and, in other areas, the things that I enjoy using as a consumer can vary wildly from what I actually enjoy making. I like everything from mobile puzzle games to metroidvanias to the biggest AAA open world rpgs that you can give me…so whatever I make will probably be somewhere between those.
For the tough parts I’m just going to persevere. I’m my own worst enemy and I’ve been battling the sucker for years now. I know when it’s time to ask for help and when it’s time to be MacGuyver.
Hi everyone,
I’m a developer who studies IT engineering. But my dream is to create my own game development studio. I know some programing concept, but I’m here to discover unreal engine and progress, obtain and experiment new game developer skills.
I don’t have a precise idea of what I would like to realize precisely. Learning more about physics, collisions, AI … etc
I’m starting this course because I’d like to learn how to make games. My brother has made games since elementary school, and now he released his first commercial game called Jump King, so I’m riding a massive high of inspiration lol. I’m studying engineering myself, so I know some programming. I have no clue how to use what I know to make games though, so this is gonna be fun!
When it comes to tough times, every small step is still a step. If I manage to pull through one little thing each day, it’s progress.
I want to learn how to write code and understand the logic behind that and building up a portfolio using C++. Also i want to lean how to make my own Games with Unreal Engine and C++.
Creating games have always been a dream of mine but I never could find the time to start due to my busy schedule. Now that all that has died down, I realize that I need more creativity in my life. That is one of the reasons I enrolled in this course. The other being because I had a close friend starting this course as well. Deep down I am a horror fanatic and I love my scary games and movies. I am completely new to this and I know it won’t be easy, but I hope to use what I learn from this course and build on it to someday produce my own horror game.
Hi all,
I’m hoping to learn c++ and be able to explore a medium that’s new to me and be able to equip myself with the tools to be able to create games and world that I feel passionate about. When the tough times come, I hope to be able to rely on the community to encourage me and help me reconnect with that feeling of excitement that inspired me to get this course in the first place!
