Grease pencil vertex weight proxy + tint modifiers

I saw a tutorial on adding fog in Grease pencil. https://youtu.be/hZz-YA7PNhY
The further the grease pencil object is from the camera, the more tint it has.
Meaning per depth layer I could use the same black pencil and still get a nice fade out.

But it got me in trouble. Instead of working in layers, I needed to change the depth, by changing the 3D cursor (The Y-location to draw on). It works but it’s problematic.
Byt the grey variations per dept layer are not equally degraded by the tint modifier (lessons learned). The trees in the third layer contain black and white elements, but they are washed out by the tint modifier. Nearly the same grey tones.
