This week I was given a theme, and it was quite difficult for me to find something suitable. I decided on a literal interpretation of “unexpected turn.”

Since I didn’t have much time to model my own car, I used the one I created for Grant’s “Hard Surface Course.” I also experimented a bit with particle systems here…
Tell me, what you think.

WIP …

Update … (not sure I can fix the lighting and other issues in time)

Final Submission:

@FedPete Do you have a suggestion why the alpha map of the knights does not cast a shadow? (EDIT fixed it. light was to diffuse, added more light sources and a new camera)

Hahaha - that’s a really cool take on the topic!

It’s probably a texture/material problem, common pitfalls:

  • Lamp(s) used doesn’t cast a shadow (check EEVEE?)
  • Object doesn’t receive shadows (like the floor) - also the furneture doesn’t cast shadows also
  • Face normal’s inverted

  • Replace temporally the floor for a basic face!
  • Hidden (double geometry?)

@FedPete Did all this. Seems the light sources haven’t been strong enough or too diffuse to create a shadow. I add more light sources and a sun to emulate the light passing through the door. Replaced the camera too.

ps: next time I’ll post my question this in the Ask section.

Oops, I misread it. Now that I’ve seen your workflow, I understand your problem. Those knights are just plain images.

You could mock the shadows by adding a plane (mesh face) with an shadow. And that said, It could be a solution to use Grease pencil because you are now working with 2D images in a 3D world. Exact what Grease pencil is made for.

We @BlenderCollab have a few days to vote. You can vote fast but also think slowly about design, colors, technique, difficulty, subject, realism, etc. Choose consciously and not on your entry.
The new subject week 03 “A Triptych about a Productive Disaster” has already started. The winner of this week’s “An unexpected turn” challenge may select a subject for next week 04 and win a badge.

@Crisus , congratulations on your fun and colorful interpretation of the topic “An unexpected turn” Reusing assets isn’t a problem. It’s part of working with Blender. As a study project, you could explore how Blender’s asset lib works and gain experience with it.

  • RayMobula - The scene sets the expectation that it will be a lot of fun. But I think it’s incomplete. The layout is also, I think again, a bit odd. The entrance to the hall is towards the children’s party. The arrangement of the benches also gives that impression. Because of that, the knights are kind of looking in a unexpected (viewers) direction.
But it has a lot of potential; maybe spend a few more hours finishing it?

Note:** I don’t want to offend anyone. I try to write down positive ideas and visions in my simple use of the English language. I am also sometimes more inspired by a particular subject or solution. I’m also learning from you!

Good input. noted. Yes, something felt off.

Biggest lesson - manage expectations. Those arches have been a much bigger challenge than they should have (?). Had to play around with 2D assets. Still, learned a lot.
