2025 Collab: Week 50 “Ancient High-Tech”

This is the Blender Collaboration 2025, week 50 challenge. Don’t be afraid to join, a lot of us are beginners. This is all to practice, have fun, learn, and get together.

This week’s subject is “Ancient High-Tech”.

  • “Ancient High-Tech” - Design and model a single 3D prop that visually belongs to an ancient culture (e.g., Egypt, Rome, Vikings, Feudal Japan, Aztecs), but serves a futuristic or modern technological function.
  • Subject selected by the previous Week 48, 2025 “ Nuts and Bolts " winner gallmerci

The rules are simple. 1 subject, 1 entry, 1 week.
You create whatever object or scene or whatever you can think of that has something to do with the subject. It can be as simple or complicated as you want, all entries are welcome!
Post your picture here in this thread. At the end of the week, we start to vote. And if you are the winner, you may choose the next subject and win a unique badge.

Deadline: 2025-12-13T22:55:00Z

For this one, I asked the AI for ideas for a very simple ancient prop, and one of the suggestions was an oil lamp or lantern. It mentioned that this object is almost as old as humanity itself, so I hope it fits. To save time, I used Doom concept art as a reference.

Also made the model 3D-printable. If anyone is interested, the links are below.

Progress: made a hand, experimented a bit with the compositor, and settled on a camera angle.

Got lost in the Compositor nodes today, probably too much, but managed to create a node setup where you can control the visibility of the surroundings using a light beam, and it’s all done in the compositor, there is no light beam in the scene. Definitely keeping this for the future if I ever decide to make a spooky animation.

I would say, an oil lamp (Aladin style) with a led light …

I know you said you used Doom as a reference, and not to be overly critical, but this is pretty much a one for one recreation of the DOOM fuse, like the colors aren’t even changed.

Yes, it is a fuse from the Doom game concept art. To me, it looks like a futuristic high-tech lantern, so to save time, I just recreated it. It’s not the final composition, but I thought it looked cool, so I shared a test render of the textured model. I hope this explains everything. :slightly_smiling_face:

I didn’t get an idea for the topic until last night five minutes before bed xP

Practicing calligraphy in year 2100. I hope penmanship will still be a thing by then ^^

We @BlenderCollab have a few days to vote. You can vote fast but also think slowly about design, colors, technique, difficulty, subject, realism, etc. Choose consciously and not on your entry.
The new subject week 51 “Christmas” has already started. The winner of this week’s “Ancient High-Tech” challenge may select a subject for next week 52 and win a badge.

I didn’t know about it either. I just had the idea and challenged myself to try make it. It took some time, but through trial and error, got there. It was quite fun to test things and learn new stuff.
