Welcome to the Unity Section 1 sub-forum

Hello everyone, My name is Chance, I have recently began development on my first video game, but I realized part way through I needed to take some sort of course, and that doing so would be easier than constantly look up tutorials or Q&As. I do have one question if anyone can answer it, I believe I am using the (currently) second newest version of Unity, from late 2017, I think I got it in December or maybe January. Am I able to do the course using this version? Or will I need to download the recommended older version.

Hello Chance, welcome to the community.

To answer your question, yes, you can use a more recent version of Unity to complete the course if you prefer. You have to bear in mind though that Unity have updated their product a number of times since the original course was released, as such there are a number of changes to the API, thus some of the code you see being typed in a lecture, may no longer work quite like that in the newer version of Unity.

@Nina, GameDev.tv’s Student Instructor for the Unity 1.0 and 2.0 courses, very kindly created a Google doc which covers all of the differences. From memory, this is linked under Resources in lecture 8. Just refer back to that, pop a question in the Q&A or post on the forum and you will get plenty of help if needed.

Hope this helps

Hello Rob,

Thank very much for this information. Now that I know about the google doc with all the updates in it, I might use the version I was already using and go off of that, rather than use and older version, from which I immediately from when I am done the course.

Thank you again,

Chance

No problem at all, you’ll be fine with the later version - just post if you have any troubles

Thank you for the help, I’ll be sure to post if I run in to any more issues.

You could also bookmark this thread, Chance. If you haven’t started with Unity 2017 yet, you could follow this course with Unity 2018 if you want.

Hello everyone! Recently started dabbling in learning coding and decided to get more seriously involved with educating myself in hope to be able to program logic on my own. I love video games especially action, adventure, platformers, anything that gets my hands sweaty trying to survive haha. looking forward to learning all I can with this course.

Hello Everyone! This is me restarting this course, lol. I started this course some time ago which led me to your course on blender and thats where i stayed for a while. Got a lot deeper into the python programming aspect of it and started playing with blender’s game engine and while it was fun and nice having my modeler and engine all in one place, I cant help but feel that Unity is probably a better direction to go for gaming… for now anyway. I’m going to try harder to stay focused and actually complete the course this time around.

Hey guys!
I’ve just started the Unity course and wanted to introduce myself. By trade I’m a freelance sound designer and audio mixer for VR, Film, and TV. Hoping to further my career by developing VR applications and games in Unity with interactive/editable 360 sound elements. I’m sure I’ll have tons of questions but very excited to get this journey started. Cheers!

Hello everyone!

I’m a fresh 3D generalist and graphic designer. Since I can remember I always loved drawing but didn’t pursue my interests for a long time. When I was 28 I enrolled in college and graduated Graphic Product Design. I’m also interested in programming and making games! Cheers!

Hello everyone,

My name is Edward Li, I live in Alabama, US. I work in a bank as help desk support. I graduated college as a Physics major but I am really interesting in computer programming and games. My favorite games are Hellblade Senua’s Sacrifice, ori and the blind forest, and the Elder Scroll series.

I have some experience in Java, python and SQL but not much with C++ or C#. I do some coding in my free time and this course popped up on my radar. I am looking forward to learning from all of you.

Thank you for your time.
