I used Alt+D to link-duplicate my bishop with its notch modifier. The resulting duplicate does not appear to be linked; that is, each piece is individually editable. I don’t have the same problem with the pawn. I’m guessing there is a bug involving the modifier, and that if I apply said modifier I will be able to duplicate-linked.
Sounds like you found your own solution in that i think something was changed in blender and you have to apply now to alt and D them
