Material Maps

Hello,

After downloading some textures from asset store, I am a bit confused on how maps work on materials and their properties.

First what does the mask do in Terrain Layers, I assign various textures and nothing happens.

And there are the material texture properties

  • Albedo
  • Metallic
  • Height
  • Normal and
  • Occlusion

What are these used for? Can I use the exported .raw on Height on a material for example?

Thanks in advance!

Hi StrawHat,

Shaders/materials are advanced topics, which are not covered in this course, so I’ll keep this brief.

A texture mask defines the areas in which the texture is visible or invisible. See the pictures and description here:

https://docs.blender.org/manual/en/2.79/sculpt_paint/texture_tex_mask.html

It’s the same concept in Unity.

For information on Albedo, Metallic, and so on, please refer to the Unity manual. There is a long description with pictures.
