How to deal with optimized engine variables?

I have updated to 4.27 both normal editor and source code and the problem has changed now.
After executing on debug from source code, a black terminal appears but nothing happens. After a while the text “press any key to continue…” shows in the terminal and after pressing it, the window closes.

I don’t suppose you changed the project at all (other than the version, obviously)?

Did you try debugging in Visual Studio as well?

There are no changes, just building with the new version and generating a couple more scripts in the .vscode folder. The rest of the project seems the same for git.

I have tried debugging in Visual Studio and if I try “debug” the console says that debugging symbols are missing and the code is optimized. I don’t know how to tell Visual Studio to use the source code version of the engine instead of the prebuilt one:

Yes, I do. I have to clarify that I have 2 unreal engine builds at the moment, one of them is the one installed with epic games launcher and the other one is the one I built from the engine source code. I don’t know if I have to do something special after building from source to have debug symbols.

You shouldn’t need to. They should be enabled for the build (maybe not the Shipping config though).

Okay so I compiled Unreal from source to see if I could reproduce that but it’s still working completely fine for me.

What branch did you build? Mine was built using the master branch.

Unreal engine source branch was ‘origin/4.27’.
My game source branch was master.

Still works fine with the 4.27. I can’t believe I haven’t asked this yet but have you tried a full rebuild?

I have tried multiple times to do a “full rebuild” of the project. But I don’t know what a full rebuild is for you so I’m going to define it first so you can correct me if you see something missing:

  • Rebuilding the engine code by removing the binaries folder and compiling it again.
  • Remove the binaries folder from the project and then regenerate project files.
  • After all of that trying to compile.

Also, another thing we can try is that you tell me what did you do step by step from git download to compilation from ue4 source and I replicate it in a different directory so we can identify what we are doing differently.

The steps you have listed are a bit odd. You remove, compile, remove, compile?
A full rebuild would be

  • Delete Binaries and Intermediate folders
  • Compile

The “rebuild” task should effectively do just that but others and I have had issues with that and the above steps fixing whatever issue there was. I’m thinking the rebuild task doesn’t remove Intermediate files which is where generated code lives.


Step by step:

Unreal:

Open the UE4.sln and build the UE4 project with the Debug & DebugGame configs.

Your project:

  • Clone the project
  • Switch the version to use the built from source engine
  • Open the sln then build and debug the two Debug configs.

I have done all of that and after starting the debug session a window appears saying that it’s having problems with shaders.

Is not another additional thing to do to generate in that directory?

You would get that from trying to open a non-editor version. It requires content to be cooked.
