Simple and quick, just went into edit and wireframe mode, Selected all by hitting A the removed duplicates
selected all then merged but also removed verts from the centre and reconnected the 2 ends for a total of 8 verts.
Remove all the inside edges. The verts along the long sides. It takes a bit of work, but well worth the effort.
