Why must the light be blocked out so laboriously by covering the ceiling so carefully? Couldn’t one just create a giant cube to block out the sunlight? It would seem more performant and can be made very quickly.

Well you don’t need to be careful blocking it out. This is how the demonstration map looks, for example
I’m not sure if one giant one would be a great idea though.
