Colored, there is so much more detail possible

Simple shading, in a 2D game it seems hard to get proper lighting on the images (I’m thinking Link’s awakening on the GameBoy with the little circular shadow beneath Link).

Cartoon style. Given the 32x32 pixel limit, it seems too hard to go for realism.

Transparency, but limit its use to prevent confusion.

Use symmetry and mirroring for a more quiet image (i.e. less noisy)
