A Warm Welcome to the GameDev.tv Community

Hi everyone! I’m taking this course just like the rest of you guys! I have no experience with coding or making games, but I hope we all make it through this crazy journey.

Welcome @Isaac_Moon, which course are you taking?

Just wanting to introduce myself. I’m Jessica, currently residing in North Carolina and embarking on my first adventure into the world of coding and engines and such. I hope to learn beside many of you, bug some of you for help and, eventually, help some of you myself!

Heyo all,

I am an architect versed on 3d softwares like Rhino, and traditional rendering engines like Vray. I’m trying to explore the possibilities of what the future version of the traditional client/client interface could be, and I am excited to learn more! I am just beginning so hope to chat soon. Is there anyone else with an architectural background on here? Or have heard of people thriving in this industry because they have a background in architecture?

Cheers

Yes! I know Blender has extensive tutorials on architectural rendering. If you ever get time, you should check out a few tutorials that are specifically catered towards architectural renders; I know BlenderGuru has quite a few valuable tutorials on their youtube channel that end in some realistic looking images!

Have any experience in Sketchup? I’ve always been more into architecture myself too, trying to get good at organic modeling now. I’d assume architects would be great for level design though  which is what I’m mostly interested in too

Nice, will check out Blender one of these days, my primary tool is Rhino and Revit and sometimes sketchup. I am interested in ‘Tango’ development and somehow introducing that into common architectural practices…

Hey! And here I was starting to feel lonely as an arch haha. I’m currently into learning Unreal, I’m interested in visualization to be honest but coding caught my attention too. Nice software combination, I’m very familiar with Revit, have tons of exp on AutoCAD and since a while ago working mostly with ArchiCAD. Never heard of “Tango” perhaps you could share a bit on it later

Hello everyone, my name is Radek, I’m from Poland, I work as a level designer in a company making mobile games, and I was brought here thanks to the Unreal C++ course.

I’m mostly interested in game and level design, but without solid coding knowledge I often felt like a craftsman without hands, especially because I want to make great games on my own (or in a small team), maybe at some point as my day job.

So yeah, here I am, hoping we can learn from and help each other.

Hi! My name is Adrián and I’m from Madrid, Spain.

I’ve started recently the course The Unreal Engine Developer Course at Udemy because I’ve grown up playing videogames and I’ve always wanted to make real some of my imaginations, although I haven’t studied to do so, I’m an optician and optometrist, and all of this is more like a hobby.

I’ve learnt a bit of Visual Basic, Python, C++ and C# in terms of coding and I’ve interested in Blender too, but I haven’t learnt anything about it yet.

I’m not very used to participate in forums, but I’ll try my best.

Nice to meet you all!!!

Nice to meet you Adrián, I’m Aron

I am currently on the “Learning programing through Unity” course, also on Udemy. Same as you I’ve grown up playing video games and always wanted to turn my imagination into something. I haven’t tried Blender, but I may later when I start making 3D games.

Nice to meet you!

Hi Aron! Thank you for replaying!

How is going the Unity course? I thought on doing it but I ended up with Unreal, not very sure why if I’m sincere. I’ll be looking for your progress! Good luck with it!

Both engines do have their benefits, but I can understand people preferring one over the other. They have different licence agreements though from what I understand too.

Thanks and good luck on your progress too. Keep working hard, never look back and keep moving forward.

Hello everyone! My name is Timothy Raiden (Rye-den) Matthews . I’m from Chicago and completely new to the programming universe. As green around the gills as they come, I’m here with high hopes of becoming an accomplished game developer. I have aspirations to create my own indy title and I know it all starts here. I look forward to learning from everyone and can’t wait to be a part of something so much bigger than just playing games; I’m going to be making games!

Welcome to the community, Tim! You’ll find that there are some many nice and friendly people here who will be more than willing to give a hand.

I’d also suggest you check out the FB group as that is often very frequent too and you may get much faster response to any issues that might stop you or slow you down. Hope to see your work in the future

Thank you for the insight Aron and well met! I can’t wait to show you what I come up with. Seeing these amazing remakes of classic titles like Ocarina of Time on the Unreal is just mind blowing. As for the Facebook group, can you tell me the name of the page?

Well they have a FB group for all the different courses. Is it Unity or Unreal that you picked up?

Unity: https://www.facebook.com/groups/completeunitydeveloper/

Unreal: https://www.facebook.com/groups/unrealcourse/

I only have experience of the Unity one, but I’m sure the guys on the Unreal course are really helpful too.

Also it is cool to see remakes done in that engine, but then with cases like Nintendo they get angry that you DARE to imitate them, even if you’re doing it for free/fun.

The course I’m currently taking is C++ and Unreal Engine development. I’ll take a look at the link, so thank you! In regards to Nintendo, that’s actually quite a bummer. It’s just fan-made projects. I’d think that if they were actually trying to make a profit with the game it be a different story.

By the way, how do you specifically utilize Unity. Do you make games or do you use it for other things? Is it possible to see your work? I’d be most interested in seeing what anybody has created.

Well I’m still learning, but both in the course AND my intent is to play games. For the moment I don’t have anything too impressive. I’ve just uploaded the course work online on itch.io: https://grognard87.itch.io/

The Prison game is a simple text-based adventure intended so I can learn the code and then the Number Wizard is an extension on how to use the Unity UI to make buttons and etc, but the latter is carbon-copy of what you can make on that part of the course as is the text adventure, but I added my own story for that one.

Currently working on Block-breaker which is similar to arkanoid and I have some ambitious ideas to make it more like something that should belong to me, but for the moment I’m trying to finish this part before I start researching code that might help me do what I want stuff to do.

Also if you check out that FB group I’m sure you’ll see plenty of people sharing their current projects too.
