2025 Collab: Week 04 “Landmarks” - VOTE CLOSED

This is the Blender Collaboration 2025, week 04 challenge. Don’t be afraid to join, a lot of us are beginners. This is all to practice, have fun, learn, and get together.

This week’s subject is “Landmarks”.

  • Landmarks - A landmark is a recognizable natural or artificial feature used for navigation, a feature that stands out from its near environment and is often visible from long distances. In modern-day use, the term can also be applied to smaller structures or features that have become local or national symbols.
  • Subject selected by the previous Week 02, 2025 “ Speeders " winner FedPete

The rules are simple. 1 subject, 1 entry, 1 week.
You create whatever object or scene or whatever you can think of that has something to do with the subject. It can be as simple or complicated as you want, all entries are welcome!
Post your picture here in this thread. At the end of the week, we start to vote. And if you are the winner, you may choose the next subject and win a unique badge.

Deadline: 2025-01-25T22:55:00Z

Hey,

For this week I had some nice idea to build a local landmark that is famous for our city and that is a good chance for me to practice more Blender modelling

It is a mining museum with a former shaft tower that is now open for visitors. It is still WIP and I hope I find more time to fine tune it this week:

Ok, had a little bit more time and worked on some small details:

That looks great. Nice lighting too.

My second challenge in 2016

I’ve loading this very old 2016 .blend file and added a floor and trees. Then I started rendering and to my surprise I got a lot of fireflies (Old blender Cycles problem). But why does this happen in the new Blender program? So I switched on the denoiser option and got this effect … no fireflies but something else … I like the effect so here it is, my quick entry of this weeks Collab.

I wanted to try with what I just learned about geo nodes… which has taken a lot of time . But here you are!

With a bit better light to show the faces…

We @BlenderCollab have a few days to vote. You can vote fast but also think slowly about design, colors, technique, difficulty, subject, realism, etc. Choose consciously and not on your entry.
The new subject week 05 “Clocks” has already started. The winner of this week’s “Landmarks” challenge may select a subject for next week 06 and win a badge.

My machine is to slow for this. I also think that the new way of working (Geo-nodes) with particles is slower in performance than in the old way.

I had not used the old way, so I cannot compare, but it is incredibly slow on my computer… and this was a quite simple thing for the grass and a bit more complex for the materials on the moais. While following the node courses I had to give up with some the most complex models and just see the videos on how things would work :woman_shrugging:

@gallmerci congratulations on your winning entry. It is a special building and clearly a landmark for the area. The nighttime setting creates a beautiful play of light and shadow. Well done.

  • Megane_Wang - Well done, your first baby steps in the use of geo-nodes. The grass is nice, but it is too artificial I think. Maybe it’s too thick? Scaling issue?
  • FedPete - The only funny thing (happy accident), are those white blurs. Like lens defects. Nut sure what happened here, I only switched on the denoiser for this old project of mine.

Note: I don’t want to offend anyone. I try to write down positive ideas and visions in my simple use of the English language. I am also sometimes more inspired by a particular subject or solution. I’m also learning from you!

Thank you for the comments. Yes, you are right. In fact I had several issues with the scale, I wanted to add something to give an idea of the scale overall, because only grass did not help much, and it ended being too high and looking almost as high in front as far away. It’s also being clearly visible against the horizon (ups!), unlike anyone would expect.
But my computer almost took 30 seconds to react after every single change in the geo nodes :woman_shrugging:, and even if I was determined to do it, it took waaaaay too much.
