Why have Ngons have not been covered?

I have takin classes at Full Sail University where we learned Maya, they were adamant about never having Ngons in a mesh. I was wondering why throughout this course ( at least up to this point ) Ngons have not been covered and honestly we create tons of them but its ok… It causes me stress having an Ngon knowing that i could fix it. Should I stress about the Ngons or are Ngons something I really dont need to worry about as much as my Full Sail instructors focused on? Also are Ngons really only an issue when importing into Unity or Unreal when making a game?
