Why does GameDev’s Unity 2D course use an older version of the Unity Engine? (Unity 2018)?

Hi @MitulKanwal,

Thank you for your question. Unity (the company) release a new version every couple of weeks, sometimes even days. Since creating a course takes a couple of months, it is impossible to always use the latest version of Unity in the videos.

Furthermore, the differences between the versions often don’t affect the content of our courses because we just cover the fundamentals in our “Complete C# Game Developer” courses. Those fundamentals have been the same for many years.

Admittedly, there are a few minor differences between Unity 2018 and Unity 2020 or even 2021, for example, the prefab system, which is now far easier to use than in the past. From what I’ve heard, there are plans to update the course soon but it might take a while until the videos get released.

Apart from the prefab system, I don’t think there are any relevant changes in Unity regarding our Unity 2D course. Many (if not most) students already follow this course with Unity 2020 or 2021. Please feel free to do the same.

Did this help?
