Why did we use extrude to zero on chess board

why did we choose extrude to zero each time before we scaled the chess casing with its edges ?

what purpose did that serve ?

This can be done by Blender itself, via the ‘Window’ menu bar top left hand side.

Using extrude, keyboard e command in edit mode, expects an additional command after pressing e. When pressing e a duplicate is made of the selected vertices, edges, faces. but then Blender expects a mouse movement because the created vertices, edges, faces in most case need to be relocated AND are in GRAB g mode.

Probably mike needs to cancel the behavior to do the next step.
