Why did Mike imported his reference image as a plane instead of a reference?

Hi everyone,
Just wandering why did Mike imported his reference bishop image as a plane instead of a reference image, I did imported my bishop image as a reference and did not encounter the selecting problem (won’t select vertices through the plane) when adjusting my model to me reference image.

We did just that with the pin on the bowling section and it worked fine back then… Is there any particular reason why we should use a plane instead of a reference image is that case?

I can’t check in Blender right now, but I think that reference images only show in orthographic perspective and on exact directions (front, side or top view) while images as plane can be rotated and be seen from various angles
