I’d like to start a side project of rythm game. Closest I can think of is the theatrythm serie. Any advice on a game engine I should start to learn for such a project? Is there any specific design aspect I should consider in this choice?
Based on an image search of theatrhythm, it seems you’re most likely looking at building a 2D game (as far as design aspects go, since you mentioned it, 2D vs 3D is probably the first question you should ask yourself). Godot and Unity are both well-suited for this, and either one is more than enough to handle what you’re looking to do. Unreal is an option for 2D as well, but that engine is absolute overkill for such a project. There are lots of other engines out there as well, but these are the 3 biggest ones, and we have courses on all of them.
I’m heavily biased toward Godot, so what I’d suggest you do is check out both Godot and Unity, learn the absolute basics of both engines with some overview videos, reviews, etc., and use that information to refine your decision. There’s also no harm in getting familiar with more than one engine =)
Thank you very much for your answer. I was also focusing toward Unity but will consider Godot as well.
What I have in mind is closer to 2.5D with layers of background elements but I suppose both engines are still good choices here. I also loved the feeling Ubisoft did with the Ubi Art Framework but to my knowledge it is not accessible to external people.
