What are shading window "slot" numbers?

I’m still in the chess set. I was starting the section on generated textures and Mike has “slot 3” and mine has “slot 1” I went back and looked at the first texture nodes lesson and he has slot 3 and I have slot 1. Did I do something wrong? What are these slot numbers referring to? He never said and I sure would like to know before I mess stuff up.

That was for the surround. When I select the board, I get slot 1 and a slot 2 is available. I’m assuming for the black and white squares. For the surround, slot 1 is the only available choice. Not slot 3. So, why does Mike have a slot 3? What’s in slots 1 and 2?

And is the surround supposed to be linked to the board somehow? Right now it’s not. They are different objects. Which I believe is the only way you could make the board hide without hiding the surround.

Thanks

No !
those are render slots. The outcome of your render is put (by default) in slot 1.
You can select an other slot for a second, third render.
Then you have more images in memory to compare your own progress.

Render a scene.
Press F11 you see the outcome of your render.
To select an other slot, you can press number 1 … 9.
Select an empty slot, and render again with a different color (or something).

Now with f11, you can switch between two render outputs. (press 1…9)

Ah now FedPete has worked out what you mean!

Render slots hold renders until you close the program. If you do not save them they are gone.

My use of them works like this. You render something, it goes into slot one automatically. Before you minimise or close that window, change to slot two. The next render then goes in there and you can compare it with the previous render in slot one.

Unless you are happy for a render to be overwritten, change the slot number, before the next render you do. It’s largely for testing, changing a bit render again, see the differences, etc.

Think of ‘slots’ as temporary picture frames for renders. They hold on to each picture until the program is closed only. There are a limited number of slots too.

Always save any render you want to keep! It is not automatic.

Hi, what do you mean with surround? Manbe a screen shot?
