Vertex Group

What does adding objects to a Vertex group do? I saw how to do it but was not sure what the reason for doing it was. Thanks.

There are a variety of reasons to use vertex groups. When rigging something for animation, the groups can be used to determine what/how much of certain areas of the mesh move with the armature. They can be used with vertex paint to determine the location and density of particle systems, such as a hair system for grass. Using a vertex group to pin certain vertices in place for cloth sims like a flag or banner.
And likely a number of other reasons to use them too.

Thank you for that explanation - I had not even considered the other uses of a Vertex group. It’s frustrating because I am limited by what I currently know and understand about Blender. Which in some ways is exciting to know I still have much to uncover and learn.
