Using Modifiers , Mirror and Boolean

Hi all,

Im currently working on my chess piece Knight,
It was made using the mirror modifier , thats not yet been applied.
Im then using a small sphere and the boolean modifier to create the eye and nostril.
BUT Im having difficulty making it work

If I have the following modifiers (not applied)

  1. Mirror
  2. Boolean

I get the eye or nostril BUt only applied to one side of the horses head

If I apply the mirror modifer , nothing changes , ie the boolean cut isnt mirrored
If I apply the Boolean , then the cut disappears

Any suggestion ??

Many Thanks

Hmmm I amy have answered my own question lol,
I applied the mirror modified , Then created a boolean cut modifier for each side of the horses head.
So a total of 4 boolean modifiers for the 2 eyes and 2 nostrils.

Is this the correct way of solving this issue ?

Try changing the order of the modifiers. Drag the boolean to the top of the list by the grid of dots ‘handle’ top right of its frame.

Whatever works is right! Blender has many ways to do many things.

I tried changing the order of the modifiers.
Moving the Boolean above the mirror mod, just caused the boolean cut to disappear.
I’m wondering if this is a 2.91 ver bug ?
I’ve seen that a new version of blender has been released and I’m considering updating to that.

Don’t forget to experiment.

With correct order of modifiers and placing boolean object on the X+ side should be all that is needed.

“Exact” method does seem to have some issues, so switch between “Fast” and “Exact” to see which one works. In my experience, “Exact” works better booleaning low-poly geometry onto high-poly geometry, while “Fast” works better when booleaning high-poly geometry onto low-poly geometry.

Good luck.
