I’m about 9 minutes in and I’ve tinkered with the painting of the lips but I’m still not happy with them. Do you have any advice on how I can improve it?

You can always edit the bitmap in Krita, GIMP or Photoshop?
Just an ‘artistic’ choice, basically the colour. Can be whatever you like as an non real human you can’t go wrong. Looks a bit like a false lipstick colour. Too positive, but women get away with it all the time! lol.
I should have clarified, my problem is that I’m having trouble getting it not to look like lipstick. Not because of the color, but because of the way it’s painted on. I may just continue with it as is and see how it looks in the end.
I would look at face images and see how little colour difference there really is in lips. That may solve it for you.
You can also introduce bitmaps, to “color in” highlights, using the bitmap for the “glossy”- shader (roughness/ shininess)—the same for minor dents, cracks. paint as bump map and import through the normal bump map node …
