Hi, I’m trying to decide between Unity vs Unreal and choosing between https://www.udemy.com/course/unitycourse or https://www.udemy.com/course/unrealcourse. I’m definitely most drawn to RTS/city-builder games. Since childhood, I’ve loved “more ambitious” titles, spending days and nights playing Age of Empires, Roller Coaster Tycoon, and other economic/simulation games like Pizza Connection 2 or, for relaxation, The Sims. These are still the only games that can keep me hooked for hours. Mobile games, platformers, and typically “relaxing” games don’t appeal to me. What should I choose?
Both are very mature engines more than capable of doing any job. It’s not really you who choose the engine but the project and the circumstances.
Some projects require specific features that are better achieved by one engine but not the other.
Some projects have a team that’s unexperienced in one engine but can use the other.
Some visual styles are easier to achieve with one but not the other and so on…
Each one with specific pros and cons.
Try setting a goal of learning at least the basics of both engines rathen than locking yourself with only one option. Spend 1 hour with one then 1 with the other, then spend a week with one then a week with other.
Soon enough you’ll know the pros and cons of each in practice in order to make an informed decision based on your personal experience.
