UE4.21 - UE4.22 VR MotionController Stopped Working

When I converted my architecture explorer project from 4.21 to 4.22 and another project built the same way, the motion controllers stopped tracking completely and I can see the meshes for them laying on the floor at what looks to be (0,0,0) or the center of the room.

If I simply create a motioncontroller in the VRCharacter constructor and attach it to the root, it works perfectly, but when we have a separate HandControllerBase class that does the same thing and then you attach that class after spawning it to the VRCharacter, it no longer tracks. Does anyone know a workaround for this to get it working again?
