I had to go into the object data properties and check the transparency box and it suddenly started working.
it’s the one that looks like an image icon.

If you are using Blender 2.92, it’s a little different. I had the same problem but figured out a way, so you need to set alpha in color in the Object Properties and then check the Transparency in Object Data Property
