The Uncategorised Category

Not the title of a book - well, assuming this topic is fairly short anyway

I noticed that it appears in the list of categories from categories menu, it doesn’t look like one that you may have created yourselves, wondered if maybe it was created automatically if someone doesn’t select a category for their posts or whether there is always one?

Any thoughts? It’s empty and should be unnecessary right?

@Rob,

Don’t know if someone already fixed it, but for me this section don’t apperas (I’m on a Windows PC):

Perhaps it appears for you because you are an Moderator?

Hmm… must be then…

Hard to which things appear because of the ellevated permissions sometimes. Thanks for the screenshot

Will reply to.your message later by the way, need time to reply properly

So are we saying it’s fixed?

Hi @Sam,

I guess that depends on whether the uncategorised category is something that was added that can be remowed if not needed, or if we know its just default behavior of Discourse.

Maybe it just show up publicly at the moment because there are no uncategorised topics?

Have you got any settings that force/ensure a user to select a category, or can they not choose one?

Is the uncategorised category removable, or does it behave differently to the other categories?

Those would be the things I would look for perhaps.

I’m not sure it’s a big deal either way. Correct me if you think it’s confusing.

Not sure if you looked at any of the settings or not?

So I just tried via some tests…

If I go to any category to post and change the category to “Select a category…” and try to post I am told I must select a category.

Thus, a user could not currently get a post into the uncategorised category anyway.

If I go into the uncategorised category and try to make a post I am advised to select a cateogry, which I cannot do as the drop down menu for categories is empty - and mandatory.

So, so far having a category called uncategorised seems fairly redundant.

One thing I am unable to test is what hapoens if, as an Admin, you choose to delete a category, are you given any choices with regards to the topics contained within. Would they for example all be moved to the uncategorised category, therefore creating a purpose for it through the forums own default behaviour, or, are there no such choices and all the posts just get deleted?

Don’t know if it counts, but for me the “Uncategorised Post” don’t even appear as an option in the “select a category” within the drop down menu, this might be a kind of temporary option that the forum uses for situations like the one that you described, or to prevent it returning a null option. Since it just appears to admins, don’t seem to be anything to worry about in my opinion.

I think this is a Discourse feature, and isn’t doing any harm. We didn’t add it, and we can’t remove it. I think this can be closed as un-solved, and have set it to after 48h of no response…
