After finishing off with the Rook and the King, here are my final chess pieces!
I thought the Knight was tough work, but I ended up spending several hours on the Rook trying different ways to make the battlements. As usual, the subdivision modifier was a nightmare! I realised the modifier was converting my face loop quads into ngons which was giving me some really odd extrusions. I ended up making that face out of triangles which worked much better. Here are some of the versions I went through:
It seems to be an unpopular opinion, but I really dislike the subdivision workflow so far. It certainly helped with the chess piece bases, but getting those sharper edges on some pieces seems like a minefield of creases, bevels, control loops and artefacting. I’m sure that’s something that will come with more experience though!
