The Blender Collab : weekly themed gallery week 13

@amhadinger hehe like the twist on this with the ship in a bottle
@Brandon_H brill idea splitting it so we can see the details, and as always youā€™ve got lots of little details in there to look at.
@rszarka comin along nicely :wink:

loving it so far!

Anyone have any good resource tutorials on how to make a palm tree?

i searched for that before and didnā€™t find anything :joy: you are not alone

Yes, me too and not found a good one. Wonder if Michael would even have the time if we ask for him to do one in the future?

Could the tree we used in the Fluffy Bunny section be adapted with shorter branches and then get massive leaves?

As usual i bit off more than i could chew for the weekly challenge ā€¦this is as far as i could get ā€¦i will finish this though and add a high poly very detailed galleon to my portfolio  i have a whole stack of half finished projects from these weekly challenges that i need to finish off haha re the palm tree i donā€™t imagine it would be too difficult, once you have modelled one of the branches just duplicate the others and then modify the shape and leaves a bit  Just guessingā€¦i will give a palm tree a go and find outā€¦

Yes, it could I suppose. But, I was terribly bad and moved all the textures elsewhere thinking I wouldnā€™t need Fluffy anymore :frowning: I am trying a different avenue for something else. But, it would be nice to see a nice tutorial on creating palms out there in the universe!

Absolutely incredible!

I attempted a ship butā€¦wellā€¦it sorta ended up more a row boat with a lot of help of a couple of lengthy YouTube tutorials! I am glad I did the tutorials because I learned a few things regarding Cycle Texture set-up. I think this would be good for a monthly challenge due to how time consuming it is to create very detailed ships.

Okay so now a question for everyone with experience using Cycles Texturing nodes. Looking at the bottom picture, I like the texture used on the oars and the rim of the boat. My question is how would you darken the actual texture itself in Cycles? I think the texture is too light compared to the rest of the boat but I donā€™t want it too dark. Yes, I could change the texture no problem but wondering what the solution would be with the set up I have.

The other questions I have is can you add and emission to the backdrop to is gives a source of light but keeps the texture?

Thanks!

To darken the texture use the top or bottom setup (of course there is many more ways)

And yes you can add emission shader to the backdrop and connect the texture as color (the same you would do with a diffuse)

PS.

Nice Scene

Hey guys. Looks like itā€™s about that time again. Another Monday, another weekly challenge!

The random number generator has chosen number 1, which is @amhadinger. Congratulations! Please create a new thread with the topic for next week!

@AbdullahAbdinā€¦Thank you for the help! I looked for a long time trying to figure this out and found nothing I was looking for. Here is the updated results using the Bright/Contrast and emission to the backdrop. It looks a lot better. Again, thanks for the solution and the compliment on the scene.

@amhadingerā€¦Congratz on your ship in the bottle being the weekly challenge winner! I look forward to your weekly challenge.

Migraine what a great job on your scene all around. The little row boat is awesome love the texturing. But the sand ā€¦damn what a job on the sandā€¦how the heck did you get it to look so real with all the little bits and pieces in it and the dimples etc. That really os very well done! Also the environment. Just a great scene all around methinks

Thank you for the compliment Rszarka.! I am glad you like it.

I was shooting for realistic but pretty much failed. AbdullahAbin gets the credit for making it look more realistic by providing info on shaders in his above post, which is why I went ahead and posted the corrected shot. The others were too dark or too washed out. The shader information AbdullahAbin kindly posted made all the difference in the world.

Actually, I canā€™t take a whole lot of credit for this other than listening to the tutorials and following instructions! I didnā€™t have a lot of time left due to illness so used the ā€œappendā€ function to add the cup, chest, necklace and some coins from the from the September-October Monthly to give it a bit of a pirate feel to it to try to meet the theme of the week.

The rowboat textures and the backdrop were textures were from Textures.com (previously known as CGTextures.com) the links for the specific textures were in the tutorial. Textures.com is a great place to get textures for personal use and they do have a commercial license you can purchase if you are doing commercial work. The water was made using an ocean modifier along with glass and transparent shaders.

As far as the sand is concerned, it is really an illusion! The way it looks in the render is due to the artwork by the person I bought the texture from eons ago. The model merely a subdivided plane with pushed and pulled verts with proportional editing turned on. The model of the sand is really pretty flat and smooth.

Here is what the actual model itself looks like with out the textures applied.

I am thinking you could do something like this with your ship and put it in the Monthly!

MMorgaine thanks for the detailed explanation of how you accomplished this awesome scene  All of your work really is very good every time !! One day i hopefully will be able to texture things as well as you  My ship is going to be a very long work in progressā€¦going to make every single tiny detail haha Iā€™m about to add the ropes and rigging which is gonna be a hard one! Had 2 people ask for me via pm to make a thread and post my progress as i go ā€¦so will do soon ā€¦i think for me the hardest part will be texturing the damned thing! I just donā€™t seem to get the workings of texturing to good so far ā€¦has me kind of stumped haha Unlike your amazing works! Were there any tutorials in particular you have done about texturing which helped you to get where you are?

I canā€™t wait to see your thread! Your ship is amazing!

Thank you for the extraordinary compliment! It is sincerely appreciated!

Blender and texturing has been the bane of my existence for a long time. It is the reason why I have never been really interested in doing more with Blender till I took this class. I will send you a PM and give you some more details.

Iā€™ve not tried to make a palm tree before, but for the trunk maybe overlapping many overlapping cones (possibly attached to bones if you want to pose it) the leaves you could either model or use a texture with a transparent shader and a texture mask which you apply the materal to a plane, like in the rabbit section with the bushā€™s leaves.

Is a good idea, Stephen. I might give it a go and see what I can come up with. I hadnā€™t thought about trying to rig it to bend it but, your idea sounds of interest. My mind keeps thinking the sapling add on like we the bush & tree in the Fluffy Bunny section. The add-on Image to Plane is great time saver for use with importing transparent images as well. If you are using cycles, it has the transparent node included in the initial set-up. Thanks for the ideas!
