Subsurface factor problem

When I paint the SSS vertex color with black and white, it doesn’t make any difference to subsurface scattering. I guess the problem is that there is no ‘factor’ node in the input ‘vertex color’. How can I make this work?

Why using vertex color?

Sub scatter is all about which color is filtered out and how deep.

Note your subsurface input is alpha, which sound to me, a wrong input.
It needs a color input.
Alpha is just a number, a grey value.

It is what the new version of the course uses, vertex painting inexplicably, lol.
It is a perfectly valid method or way but seems to me practically no one makes any use of it. Makes it hard to solve issues though.

It is also an old Blender feature.
So yes, why teaching it.

You have a vertex colour node whereas when I try it in my same version of Blender there is only an Attribute node to use which is what Grant has. He then uses the Fac output there being no alpha in that node. Might this be the root of the problem?

Yes, I linked the color node of the vertex color SSS to the subsurface node and it worked. Thanks!
