Subdivision with Chess piecebottom

I don’t really have idea how this is low poly method. Applying subdivision generates damn many faces
Here is my two takes on this.

Subdiv can smooth models out, however this is a beginners course and just an introduction to sub div. Keep it simple. Too many get the idea slapping on a subdiv magically makes a low poly look high. It needs careful use and control. Going off the basic set also adds problems in that are not covered or dealt with. Absolutely fine if you are happy to work through the problems, but that might mean do not start to make it like the course set!

In the chess model section after making the chess piece base low poly from high poly Mike applies subdivision modifier to show us how to “adjust edit cage to modifier result”. But after explaining that he removes the subdivision modifier in the next lecture. While making all the chess pieces Mike does not use any subdivision modifiers. So the resulting pieces are all low poly.It is a low poly chess set after all.
As NP5 said, subdivision can use to smooth out models. And applying subdivision suddenly does not make a model magically high poly(Not always). Lot of the times it needs tweaking and adjusting and careful control to reach the desired level.
But if you want to make a high poly model it is more than fine. And if you want to make a model different from what mike made its fine too.But it will be better to do it after you practiced and understood the concepts and techniques used in the section and explained by Mike. That way it will create less confusion and errors and problems.
Any way,Your model looks good.Have fun Dude!!
