I had planned on making something simple: just navigating a 3 x 3 grid (which you can see in the top-left), but as I went on I realized I needed to make whole new branches just for the slightest differences. There are three fail conditions, and one win condition.
The numbers very quickly stopped making sense, and I ended up just ignoring them.
