SOLVED: Simple Outliner Question - Can't see inside collections

I’ve run into an issue that I’m hoping is a simple fix.

I’ve got my well model with several collections (Brick Well, Wood Supports, Tiles, etc.). I’ve noticed that only a couple of these are expandable.

If I expand the Lighting Rig collection, I can see the three lights inside. If I expand Brick Well I can see 4 “Brick Ring 0X” collections I made within, but can’t expand those collections. I can still select individual items in the editor, but I can’t get to them in the outliner.

If I switch the outliner window to “Blender File” from “View Layer” I can get to the individual items, but that’s not where I’m wanting to work (especially when following the tutorial).

Any advice? Did I click something weird that locked these collections down somehow?

Edit: Reading again I realized I misunderstood the issue at first…

Got two ideas…
Create another Collection and move the objects with ‘M’ to it.

If the above doesn’t work:
Create a new file and Append the Scene or Collections of this file to the new one.
If the Collections import broken too… then append the Objects and create new collections

Thanks. I tried moving the items to a new collection already (and once again after reading this) and no luck. For example, if I move four of the tiles to a new collection, it behaves in the same way. I can’t expand the collection to see inside, but if I turn off that collection the four tiles I put in it disappear.

Ok you tried a new collection in the same file, but have you tried a new file and Append from the old?

I had to do some digging to figure out how to do that, but it looks like it worked (more or less).

The only weird part is that I initially wound up with multiple collections of the same thing. Hiding A but not B didn’t change what I saw in the editor, but deleting either one deleted the objects from both.

Any ideas if that’s a random switch I flipped or something? I want to avoid running into that again, but at least I know a way around it this time!

No idea dude, to me looks like your file is pretty bugged…

Also one thing that I noticed is that deleting the Collection does not delete do objects inside
So another thing you could try was delete the bugged collections(the objects automatically goes to the root of the scene) and recreate them with another name perhaps, then move the objects back in.

Weird. Yeah something strange must be going on with this file. I wonder if it’s just the nature of using a beta? Tried deleting all the collections and they’re gone, but the model is still there?

If I go over the “Blender File” option instead of “View Layer” they’re all still hiding out. Very strange. Searching for the object name while in “View Layer” also doesn’t produce any results.

I guess I must have just run into a weird bug?

Could you upload the blend file here so i can take a look as i am curious on this now.
It could be a bug in that the issue being that they gave the ability to turn collections on and off and it broke something.

If i can unravel what happened we can try and prevent it happening again.

dude, by looking the image, noticed something.

It’s clear that now “Mesh” objects is invisible in outliner

2.8 has a filter option for the outliner (filter icon), where you hide objects by category(light, camera, mesh…)

Maybe you have played with that and changed the visibility of Meshes?

That did it! Somehow that one selection in the filter was turned off. I must have hit it when learning my way through key combos or something? Thanks, now I know where to look if this happens again!

I was about to upload the file, but capa14 solved it below! Looks like somehow I turned off “Meshes” in the filter.

I don’t believe I’d even opened the filter before this lesson, so I must have stumbled my way into a hotkey or something? Either way, looks like this is the solution in case the problem pops up for anyone again.
