Smiley with shade issue, please help :)

does anyone know even when switched to non-colour data, i still have squared shadows around the ball? Is that just because its still a low poly mesh?? smooth shading is on also!

Update…

I rendered my high poly version… is this because of the poly count? If so how can I make a LP mesh and still keep smooth shadowing across the object?

Thanks for any help in advance

Update…

And this is my setup in case that helps!

Hi KristianM,

This is related to how cycles renders the icosphere in smooth shading. Even if you unplug your normal the shading would look like that. So what you want to do here is to add more geometry to your low poly mesh. Simple subdivision surface will do and you will get nice and smooth shading. If you even add one level the shading looks good and you are still in the limits of the low poly threshold, depending what you started your icosphere with.

Hope this helps!

Thanks for your help Jax! That answers my question that you’ll have to up the poly count! I also learnt in a later lecture that the multires modifier also really helps!
