I wanted a sand colored stripe up the stairs but I think I had to make those cuts before applying the array. I’m not willing to cut up each step individually.

If the array is not applied you only need to edit the original step. That is the power of the non destructive work flow.
I applied the array for the joining mesh objects lesson. Going forward I’ll need to remember to wait.

It could be solved by using a material node configuration.
Working with material nodes is part of this course.
It can also be done by image textures.
Be patient it will come to you!
