Scaling an empty

Trying to understand why it’s better to import an image as a plane rather than as an empty.

At 1:23 Michael says that if an image is imported as an empty, we can’t do any scaling on it. To test that, I imported an image as an empty, but found that I can scale it!

Is this because I’m using a more recent Blender build (2.82a on Linux) , or is there some other gotcha awaiting me in regards to scaling?

No idea, I have been happily dragging and dropping in images and scaling them about as required without knowing it might have been expected to be different.

To be honest its seems like they broke images as planes in most cases, I prefer using the alternative method so this has never bothered me too much.
