Running outta time (clock renders)

I fixed his lighting a bit since it was bugging me. Let me know which you prefer!

We’ve moved into our new home, but some part of me is intimidated to properly get back into my work. I’ve been trying to work around this by just making myself make something simple. It started with a teddy bear, which turned into a room setting, and has led to multiple clocks being made now. They’ve been more challenging than I expected, but it’s lead to great learning experiences.

Need to get back into animation practice but I am enjoying feeling confident again in just using blender and modelling things at all. Looking forward to sharing more soon.

Nice!

:+1:

Re: lighting preference: while the first is good, it can’t match the warmth offered by the second (that could even be down to the wood colour though, maybe because my understanding is that grandfather clocks tend to be made from richly-coloured woods. Even compared to your reference, this wood is quite light). On the other hand, the second feels somewhat dark vs the first, almost like the render was taken as sunset. So… I kinda don’t know which to prefer! I’d say they both fit for different use-cases. To be taken with a grain of salt, as lighting isn’t something I’m particularly strong at XD

Thanks for the feedback and support! I pulled the colors from the 2D drawing reference I shared in the post as well. I definitely agree they don’t translate as perfectly, so I could have adjusted them further. Lighting is a lot of fun to play with, hard to get quite right.

The darker one. It’s more cosy, and warm light

I never uploaded the individual images of each clock - and I actually do come back and make additional ones still when I am in an art block. So, bonus new toy-robot clock and another toy one.

The last one I was working on was this below, it has not been finished yet and it looks like I lost the texture for the clock face, but maybe one day he’ll get completed.

Here are the three new references I pulled for these:

Let me know which one you like most. Thanks for your time.

Indeed! I think that’s my favourite of the last 3 - he reminds me of the programmable robot from Jump Start 3rd Grade =)

They are all nice! Just note that the 3rd one is reflected right-left. I particularly like the first one, but I am intrigued with the robot - the last one

If you’re looking to get more animation practice, I would recommend animating the robot clock. It’s so cute! You can do an animated GIF or movie for the digital clock face and rig the robot for some fun animations.
