rollerball is not rendering in the scene view but is in the game view using unity 5.6.3

I added another object and noticed it wasn’t rendering in the scene view either and discovered somehow the default layer had been unassigned automatically when dragging objects in to the hierarchy. Assigning the default layer made them visible again.
