Rigid Body World duplicating materials?

I liked the challenge of thinning out our blend file by eliminating duplicate materials caused by additional scenes. I discovered that I had triplicates of my materials, one for each scene and an additional for the Rigid Body World which I set up to animate the bowling collision. Is this duplication by the rigid body world expected? I reassigned the second scenes’ meshes to used the linked material, then in Outliner > Display Mode set the display mode to Blender File and searched for the orphaned-but-not-orphaned materials and just removed them from the meshes in the rigid body world collection. I’m assuming the rigid body world duplicated all the objects for its calculations? Is this expected/typical? What am I missing?

I didnt notice anything when running my tests with this then again i dont remember setting materials to it either.
If you can upload the blend file i can take a look but this isnt what would expect and seems like a bug.
