The problem, of course, is that you don’t have an easy way to select your enemy to attack with the controller, but really, you do… I sort of went with the WoW and FFXIV models… (Wow doesn’t allow controllers, FFXIV does, but there are some similarites in behavior).
In Wow, for Ranged attack, you can select an enemy by clicking on them OR by using the Tab key… Tab cycles through all the enemies who are visible at the time being. Luckily, our controller comes with a plethora of extra buttons, so I would assign one to “target next”… then when you click on the action/attack button, it can make the ranged attack shoot towards the enemy.
From there it can work either way… if we choose the “approach enemy, shoot enemy” model, once you click attack, just take control away from the joystick… if we choose the (preferable, IMO) shoot from a distance and hope for the best, then we could do like Warcraft and issue a “I’m too far away” message.
