Hi there, following the lesson where we learn how to do the ramp in the pyramid I wanted to understand what is the purpose of extruding then pressing ESC? I see how the teacher does in the video to then generate the ramp but i dont quite understand it. I did the ramp by extruding an edge from the top and moving it down though it doesnt look so good. Just wish to understand the lesson. Thanks
I do not follow the lessons, so can’t say why he needed that.
But ESC
cancels to current action. It doesn’t undo.
It cancels the action on that moment.
If you extrude with e
, Blender copies the select face. But Blender also expects you to move to face along the Z-ax. If you press ESC
instead. You have created an additional face loop (a face on the same previous spot). This seams silly but it has his purposes. But it can also lead to problems, if you are not aware of this.
But I can not say why his did this (Maybe in error, which he wil fix later on).
Try this:
- create a cube and go into edit mode.
- select a face and drag it a bit, using ‘g’.
- press
e
to extrude. move the face a bit - press
e
to extrude again but immediately pressESC
. - Nothing seams changed !
- but press
g
to grab the face and move it. You’ll see an edge loop.
Edge loops like this are used to make sharp corners, when the subdivision
modifier is used. You will learn.
