I tried adding a simple horizon with a sun lamp, sky, and a small back light behind the pyramid.

How did you “Inset” those faces (on the roof and on the front wall) and the line (front)?
I just watched the subdivision lecture and I guess, you achieved those “cuts” by subdividing!
You would be correct. I did use subdivisions.
