Pyramid Stairs extrude railings - can it be locked to just z axis?

I found that at about 2:45 in lecture 32 I press Z but the extrude could still take place with a wobble in the x axis. Am I missing something?
Is there a way to lock the extrude to go directly in Z ONLY. I had both the “railings” faces selected and I had learned somewhere how to exclude a dimension by pressing shift and the dimension, For me I used E for extrude then Shift-y to exclude the y axis but I didn’t want to try shift-x as well. It seems you ONLY press Z to lock the extrusion to z axis but if I use that , to reiterate, I get the ability to wobble in x also.

I managed to avoid this by looking carefully.
Any help appreciated.

I believe first time I pressed Z it would extrude in a 90° angle from the surface, if I pressed it a second time it would actually stick to Z axis only. This was made visible by just showing the blue Z-axis line.

Thanks, I will give that a go.
