Basically as the Title says i will go front view with wire frame and x-ray on will click “L” To select the whole wall and it only selects the front face then with the step to press “Ctrl L” it selects the back wall and the pillar and deselects the front wall.

Any help needs something to see.
Pressing L is also determined by where the mouse is, it selects all connected geometry. Not connected then it will not select it.

Are you sure this object you are selecting is the same mesh (or another mesh object)?
Duplication problems? Check doubles on distance.
