The course gives the impression that Cycles can’t render points, which it can.

Hmmm, I’m confused.
In math, a point, or a sequence of points (a line), can NOT be seen.
Only faces with the right normal direction can be seen.
A face is also infinite thin! And can not seen as such.
I agree with everything you said. but I was talking about the data-type point cloud.
I should have been more precise with my language by saying that it renders points as spheres. But I felt like that could be a little misleading to people who are learning about the different data types for the first time.
If I’m not mistaken, cycles doesn’t use polygonal spheres, because no matter how far I zoom in on the spheres, the outline is always smooth.
I hope that clears up the confusion.

To visualize it in Blender, it is rendered as a sphere.
I don’t do much in geo-nodes. Quickly it gets too slow on my machine.
