This is possible, but it requires a plugin. We’re currently using a hosted version of Discourse, however we do plan to self-host later in the year.
The costs for the hosted version seem way overpriced!
It’s worth it to us for the time it saves us. All our time is focused on content, not server and mail system maintenance, version upgrades, SSL certificates etc.
We need to “self-host” the forum to do this, ETA Q3 2016

We have no short-term plans to self-host Discourse and modify it, so we’re at their mercy for now. Please do suggest to @discourse yourselves that they add a thumbnails plugin, they may decide to do it.
